Title: Safe Sleep for Infants: Let's Talk Tips, Myths, & Must-Knows

Description: This presentation will engage mental health professionals in a critical conversation on the importance of safe sleep practices, rooted by the desire for all children to feel loved, secure, and wrapped in a sense of community. It will provide the latest evidence-based guidelines, including the ABCs of safe sleep, and how to identify and address unsafe sleep environments, as professionals aim to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID), including SIDS and accidental suffocation for children up to one year old. Special attention will be given to traditional considerations, real-life case studies, and strategies for respectful and effective communication with parents, caregivers, and colleagues. Professionals will also receive resources and tools to support families in creating safe sleep environments, that foster supportive education, collaboration, and reflection. Through interactive discussions and practical scenarios, this training will empower mental health professionals to advocate for and promote infant sleep safety within their communities.

     By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the key principles of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safe sleep guidelines

  2. Recognize common sleep-related risks and how to mitigate them in a variety of environments.

  3. Education on safe sleep practices, including positioning, bedding, and environmental factors.

  4. Address personal beliefs and parents’ concerns about safe sleep recommendations.

  5. Respond effectively to all sleep situations and advocate for best practices.

Kathrin Auger grew up in Switzerland and moved to the United States in 2002. A retired NICU RN, certified birth and postpartum doula, postpartum doula trainer, lactation education counselor, public speaker, former board member of DONA International, and past adjunct faculty at Bastyr University, she brings over 30 years of experience in maternal and newborn care. Kathrin combines medical expertise and evidence-based knowledge with a passion for perinatal support and mentorship, empowering birth and postpartum professionals.
