Description: Communication is of high importance in all fields. The ability to connect and communicate effectively with a variety of people, building connections among each other to overcome regardless of the challenges they may face, is often complicated. Pulling from their vast experiences as educators and community leaders, Robert and Dana Owens will lead this session, exploring how to communicate effectively and powerfully across lines of difference. This session will include self-exploratory activities that will enhance participants’ understanding of themselves to better work with both colleagues and clients, advocating for resiliency and healthy relationships for our communities.

Dr. Robert Owens, Senior Executive for Access and Community Outreach A proud four-time Tech graduate, Dr. Robert Owens – “Dr. Rob” as he is affectionately known across campus – has remained closely connected to the university for more than 30 years, including more than 20 years of full-time staff and administrator service. Dr. Rob previously served as director of Minority Affairs – now known as Intercultural Affairs – assistant vice president for Student Affairs, and interim vice president for Student Affairs.
Today, as senior executive for access and community outreach, Dr. Rob and oversees the development, execution, and monitoring of strategic efforts around access, belonging and community outreach with regard to recruitment, enrollment, and retention of faculty, staff, and students.
Outside of his service at Tech, Dr. Rob is an active community leader and volunteer, including coaching youth sports and serving as a founding member of the nonprofit IMPACT Cookeville. Dr. Rob is a father of five and his married to his college sweetheart and fellow Tech alum Dana.
